For this work, Murakami draws upon the legend of the Karajishi (“China-lion”), a mythological animal guarding the threshold of Japanese Buddhist temples. The ancient figure is considered a force that averts evil, while inspiring happiness and joy. In “As the Interdimensional Waves Run Through Me, I Can Distinguish Between The Voices of Angel and Devil!” Murakami features the central lion figure atop an arch of colorful skulls, a distinct contrast to the frequent presence of the artist's joyful flowers. Murakami is known for his works that combine Pop, animé, and otaku within a stylized picture-plane.
